Welcome To The Northeast Spring Thing Fling Event Page!

The Northeast Spring Thing Fling is an annual event dedicated to all Volkswagen Thing owners, and open to all air-cooled Volkswagen enthusiasts. Held each May at Harriman State park in New York, this event is centrally located so that Thing owners from at least 8 states can make the drive in 4 hours or less! So bring your Thing and let's have a fling this Spring!

The Northeast Spring Fling 2010

The date for this year's Spring Thing Fling will be Sunday, May 23nd, 9 am to 4 pm at Harriman State park in NY. This year will be a casual gathering without trophies or awards. Just an opportunity for fellow Thing owners to get together and celebrate the greatest car ever made! A Thing parts swap meet, cookout, games for the kids and other fun stuff is all being planned. We also have a new Spring Thing Fling tradition... Slim's coveted "Thing Punch" will be part of the festivities.

The central meeting area is at Lake Welch Beach in Harriman State Park. Note that there are 3 large parking lots at Lake Welch. We will be meeting at PARKING LOT 3 (the main parking lot located directly behind lake Welch beach - see map below). As the event will be taking place before Memorial day there are no fees for parking or admittance to the beach. Unfortunately, no pets are allowed at the park.

There are picnic tables, charcoal grills and restroom facilities next to the lot, and the beach is only a short walk away. Feel free to bring along E-Z Up tents, folding chairs and your favorite food for the grills.

For those who want to make a weekend out of it, overnight camping is available at either the nearby Sabago Cabins, or Beaver Pond campground.

Northeast Spring Thing Fling 2009

2009 was our first attempt at hosting a regional VW Thing event (or any VW event for that matter), and we certainly learned a lot (apparently, setting it up as a 3-day event was a bit too ambitious). The event was held Friday, May 15th through Sunday, May 17th at Harriman State park in NY. We had 5 VW Things in attendance and one VW Bug. Several other Thing owners showed up but unfortunately couldn't bring their Things. A good number of attendees opted to camp out both nights at the nearby campgrounds and rental cabins.

Unfortunately, the weather didn't want to cooperate. It was unseasonably cold, with either rain, heavy fog or high winds all weekend. Despite Mother Nature's attempt to put a damper on the event, those who attended had a good time. We got to talk shop, fire up the grills for breakfast and lunch, check out some cool Things and meet their owners. Thanks again to all who attended. Here's to hoping 2010 is even bigger and better!

It's a Thing event, but all air-cooled VW's are welcome...
